Geography

Most of the Geography classrooms are located on B floor in the newer wing of the school.

Students at S.C.S. are required to take Geography of Canada in grade nine at either the academic, applied, or locally developed level. After that, they are able to take a variety of courses at various levels of study in grade 11 and 12. Some of these courses include Grade 11 Physical Geography, Grade 12 Travel and Tourism and Grade 12 World Issues.

In collaboration with the Classical Studies and International Languages program, a 2 credit course called International Language and Travel will be offered.Studies in European languages (French, Spanish, Italian, etc.) will be followed by a focus on the history/geography of countries that will be visited in a three week excursion during Semester Two. Students require a credit in French at the grade 11 Advanced/Academic level to apply for this course.



The Great Canadian Geography Challenge:

Every year, students in grade 9 geography classes participate in this national quiz contest which tests their knowledge rise from our sponsor,

NCS Technologies/KWIC Internet.

History Department

Similar to the Geography program, most of the history classrooms are located on B floor.

Students are required to take Canadian history in grade 10 at either the applied, academic or locally developed level. Students must also take the half credit course of Civics while in grade ten. After grade ten there are a variety of classes to take from the History program at SCS. In grade 11, students may take an introductory course to Canadian Law, American History, or the Study of Ancient Civilizations. Grade 12 courses include Economics, Canadian History, Modern Western Civilization, and an advanced Law class. For those interested in other Social Sciences, we offer three courses within the Family Studies department, such as World Religion. Through the variety of these class students may have to opportunity to visit the Royal Ontario Museum, and meet with local War of 1812 Historical re-enactors.

The Begbie National History Contest:

Every year, senior history students are invited to participate in a National Canadian History Contest. In the past, SCS students have ranked in the top 5 in the country. Cash prizes are given to the top three places in the country.

Teachers:

Members of the Geography/History Department bring a wide range of specialty and expertise in the various subject and thematic areas of the courses offered at SCS. Because of the wide range of experience and expertise, students can be guaranteed that they will receive the best possible instruction in the various areas and classes within the department.
