The Family Studies Department operates under the Social Science and Humanities Curriculum. Social Sciences explore aspects of Human Society, thought and culture. The courses explore individual and group behaviour needs, and patterns and trends in society.

All courses provide students with essential knowledge and transferable skills that are applicable in various areas of their lives as well in the workplace. Individual courses provide students with a foundation for a variety of possible postsecondary destinations: positions in the retail and service industries; community college programs in community services (including early childhood education, child and youth work, and developmental service work), creative arts (including fashion, fashion design, garment construction, and chef training) or business (including human resources); and university programs in such fields as anthropology, family studies, food and nutrition sciences, health sciences, human resources, psychology, philosophy, religious studies, social work, and sociology.

In each course students are taught a variety of research skills such as formulating appropriate questions, collecting and analysing data , differentiating between evidence and opinion, recognizing bias, and organizing and communicating results effectively.

At the grade nine level the popular foods and nutrition course is available. This course is open to students of any grade. In grade ten , the individual and family living course deals with individual development and family life such as resource management and conflict resolution.

In the senior grades in addition to the more advance courses in food and nutrition and family in society, courses are offered in specialized from parenting and resource management to fashion design, living spaces, and shelter. These courses give students an opportunity to develop a range of hands on, practical skills and to refine research skills.
